What is Hip Hop Humanism?
Hip Hop Humanism is a not a new form of Humanism. It has always been a part of Hip Hop. Why? Throughout the years Hip Hop as brought all types of people together. It has been a platform for the people to express themselves through art and skill. Telling their stories, our stories and the stories that we refuse to be ignored. We embrace all Humanist, because we want humanity better for us all, not for all of us except... It is an all inclusive culture initiative that uses art to speak to the self that rational ideas can be reached. We believe the creative aspect of Human beings is the essence of our humanity. It is the secret weapon of our consciousness. We may be rational intelligent and morally structured beings, but we are primarily sentiment beings so where we feel, laugh, cry, dance and love lays the greatest opportunity for making Human connections. It is the realm of the creative self where we find meaning, while rationality and integrity are the traits more equipped to address the search for purpose.
Our Mission is to re-establish the ties that bind us as people worldwide using the Culture of Hip Hop. Keep in mind that Hip Hop is more then the music, style of dress or an attitude; it is the art of creative thinking, which we believe is one of the key components of a healthy society.
Right now, this is truly needed, because our society is more divided than it’s ever been. No one is hearing one another because no one is feeling one another. The melting pot is becoming a boiling cauldron. We must get to know one another all over again, so we will create bridges, provide forums and open up spaces for dialogue, interaction, celebration and inclusion.
Hip Hop has always been about taking diverse slices of life and creating an artistic whole. So we will take the passion of the Italians, the wit of the Irish, the spice of the Latino’s, the honor of the Asians and the rhythms of the African to truly define a diverse American culture using the following agenda.
Hip Hop Humanism seeks to address the meaning.
Since its inception, Hip Hop has been Humanistic in its approach to building bridges and creating community in the early 1970’s when gangs were over running the Zulu Nation New York went from neighborhood to neighborhood and brought the warring groups together under their banner. They used music and culture to fuse the humanistic ideals of their philosophy to the psyche of a hard-edged street movement. Zulu nations are still going strong today, over four decades later.
Similarly in the 1980’s, when violence threatened to engulf Hip Hop itself, rappers Krs One, Public Enemy and several others came together to record “Self Destruction” a song aimed at bringing consciousness to the streets while on the west coast Ice T led a like minded coalition to record “We’re All in The Same Gang” Taking it a step further Krs created the H.E.A.L. movement Human Education Against Lies. A Humanity minded endeavor that evolved into the temple of Hip Hop, which is recognized by the United Nations. There are all-important milestones in Hip Hop History so it is in the spirit that we under take the initiative of Hip Hop Humanism. What are your thoughts? Any ideas? Post them here.
